Whether you DIY or have a professional childproofer service your home, the following useful tips will go a long way to maintaining safety in the home.

  • Small Objects – Most babies can’t put a small object into their little mouth fast enough.  Really anything that can fit through a toilet paper roll can be choked on.  Coins, rubber bands and paper clips are some of the commonly dropped items that can instantly make any home dangerous.
  • Plants – Go easy on plants and flowers in the home.  Some plants can be toxic to children, cause choking hazards and/or create allergens.
  • Secure all large furniture and tvs with anti-tipping straps / restraints to reduce the chance of a tip-over which could cause a severe injury or fatality.
  • Never leave a baby / child unattended in the bathtub – bathtubs, buckets and toilets are the leading cause of drowning for children under 1.
  • Restrict access to the kitchen.  Even when great care is taken to childproof a kitchen, there are numerous lurking dangers that just cannot be eliminated.  The kitchen should be for eating and consider restricting play activities to other areas of the home.
  • Install carbon monoxide and smoke alarms outside of every bedroom and check these every 6 months.
  • Install hardware mounted gates at the top and bottom of the stairs.
  • Cover all electrical outlets in the home using sliding electrical outlet covers.  Where this is not possible, use plastic electrical outlet plugs.
  • Install window guards on windows above the first floor.
  • Install latches or locks on any drawer, cupboard or closet that contains toxic , sharp or hazardous items.
  • Always keep weapons/ firearms locked away securely and out of sight.
  • All swimming pools should be surrounded by a locked high four-sided fence .
  • Remove all corded blinds or corded window treatments from a child’s bedroom or playroom.  There is no need to sacrifice style for safety – Dwell Studio, Home Depot and Pottery Barn Kids have a variety of cordless options for varying budgets.
  • All medicine, vitamins, cleaning products and toxic items should be kept in high locked cupboards / containers.
